Greenwood’s Season Kicks Off

Greenwood Park had a frustrating rain affected draw on Saturday but secured a convincing 142 run victory a day later as their season preparations got underway.

On Saturday, Park took on Sandridge CC and despite surviving rain and hail showers early on, the game was eventually called off after another downpour made conditions unplayable.

Before the elements put pay to any further cricket, Chris Kent had scored a fine 56* as he led his team, almost singlehandedly, to a score of 119-10 in 35.4 overs.

With the ball, Mohsin Akhlaque bowled extremely well on debut, claiming 2-9 from his five over burst.

Troy Petchey showed his class with 2-11 from 3.4 overs and Uzair Shafiq, another debutant, collected 1-14 in an impressive first outing for Greenwood.

But with the game finely poised, with Sandridge 93-5 off 25.4 overs, the weather struck again and – with no more play possible – the match finished a draw.

On Sunday, the conditions were far more conducive to cricket and Park took full advantage.

Jimmy Otter struck an excellent 71 against Ebury Strollers as his recovery from a broken hand continues.

There were also solid contributions from Azhar Rashid (21), Raja Palaniappan (25) and Shafaat Hussain (29) as Greenwood posted 200-10.

In response, Ebury never got going as Navid Malik took 4-20 to put Park in complete control.

There were then wickets for Arslan Khan, Uzair Shafiq, Srikanth Shetty and two run-outs as Greenwood bowled out their hosts for just 58.

Next weekend Park travel to Pirton CC as their Saturday league season begins.
